Hi all, I'm a software developer doing mostly full stack web and iOS. I've been doing contract work for close to 10 years. I've never kept a portfolio or a website and I've honestly never needed them but lately I've had quite a few requests to see my portfolio for conversations to move forward. I'm not a designer and probably not interested in paying much for a portfolio site design so what I'm hoping to find is just a dead simple site or template or place to post my projects. If I could find a way to have some discretion too that would help as maybe half my projects I worked as a subcontractor for different agencies and would rather mention their client and the work rather than just 'helped some agency'. I'm not quite sure how to handle that. I thought about hiring a designer to make a portfolio PDF I could email to people but then I'd have to pay every time I wanted to update it with a new project. That's why I'm leading toward a web product as it would be easy to keep up to date. So I guess I'm curious what everybody uses for a portfolio and if anybody has advice? I know it's 'my hammer' so everything looks like nail but I'd recommend going the WordPress route. You can get a really top-quality portfolio-focused theme for $50-100 - and you get plenty of control over what gets displayed. And if you ever need it, you can always hire a developer to make you something bespoke/adapt an existing theme. As to your subcontractor dilemma - I tend to get called in to build what has been designed - I just make sure it's absolutely clearly it was designed by the agency/designer (and link back to them) and then write the description in a way that comes across as 'collaborative' then 'the hired help.' Hope that helps! I have yet to come across anything better than They are free for use and all made by the same person, so there are many patterns that you can pick up on. From there I would add that on top of a CMS layer if needed. These days I recommend Craft CMS by far.
